"Finding Freedom: Embracing the Process of Overcoming Struggles"

Crying out to God, overwhelmed by my struggles, I desperately sought His help to break free from the grip of my fears and sins. I begged Him to take away my struggles—struggles with sexual immorality, covetousness, and a deep-seated longing for provision. Growing up in a functionally dysfunctional family, I had this idealized fantasy of what a perfect life and family should look like. But as I reflect on what God has done in my life, I’ve come to realize a profound truth: sometimes, it’s not about asking God to instantly remove our struggles but inviting Him to walk with us as He eases them out over time.

The Purpose of Struggles

This may be an unpopular opinion, but I believe struggles are not without purpose. God promises in His Word that there is no temptation we face that we cannot overcome (1 Corinthians 10:13). Yet, often we pray for struggles to vanish instead of seeking His presence and guidance in the process. Over time, I’ve learned that the more we spend time with God, the less appetite we have for the things that hold us back.

Even in moments where deliverance is necessary, the act of drawing near to God brings revelation—and with revelation comes transformation. Our struggles don’t define us; they refine us. They teach us dependence on God, equip us for ministry, and give us a testimony to share with others.

The Power of Words and Thoughts

While seeking God is essential, another vital element in overcoming struggles is recognizing the power of our words and thoughts. What we allow ourselves to think and speak significantly impacts our perspective, our actions, and even our spiritual growth. Negative thoughts can feel overwhelming when we’re in the midst of a struggle. But the good news is this: many negative thoughts can be overcome by intentionally speaking the opposite—declaring positive truths aloud. The Bible tells us we have the power to declare a thing and see it established (Job 22:28). Negative thoughts become negative actions when we feed them, but what about our positive thoughts? Often, they are impoverished simply because we don’t nurture them enough.

Speaking life and truth over yourself can shift your perspective and renew your mind. When you declare God’s Word, you activate its power in your life. Instead of saying, “I can’t do this,” say, “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me” (Philippians 4:13). Instead of dwelling on shame or guilt, declare, “There is no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus” (Romans 8:1).

When we align our thoughts and words with God’s truth, we begin to see transformation. Our struggles may not vanish overnight, but our perspective changes, and we start to experience victory one step at a time.

A Journey Toward Transformation

Many people I’ve encountered struggle with shame and guilt over their past or current struggles. They feel stuck, longing for God to “take it all away.” But what if the very things we wrestle with are the tools God uses to build our character and prepare us for our calling? If God removed our struggles instantly, how would we learn endurance, faith, or reliance on His strength? How would we relate to others who are in similar battles? The truth is, the things we strive to overcome often become the areas where we can minister most effectively. God transforms our greatest battles into our greatest victories—if we allow Him to.

Three Encouragements for the Journey

If you’re in the middle of a struggle today, I want to encourage you with three truths:

  1. Your struggle isn’t who you are – Your identity is not tied to your struggle but rooted in Christ. You are a new creation (2 Corinthians 5:17).

  2. There’s no struggle you cannot be delivered from – God’s power is greater than any stronghold. Trust in His promise to provide a way out and lead you to freedom.

  3. The strategy is the secret place and the words you speak – Transformation happens when we spend time with God and align our words with His truth. The more we seek Him, the less appetite we have for sin.

The Secret Place: The Key to Freedom

Because we are sinful by nature, our first instinct is often to choose what’s contrary to God. But when we dwell in His presence and speak His Word over our lives, He transforms us from the inside out. True freedom isn’t found in trying harder; it’s found in surrendering more.

So, if you find yourself asking God to take away your struggles, I challenge you to shift your prayer. Ask Him to walk with you through the process, to reveal His purpose in the struggle, and to give you the strength to persevere. And as you walk, speak life, truth, and the promises of God over yourself.

When you seek Him with your whole heart and declare His Word, you’ll experience a transformation that no quick fix could ever achieve. Struggles are not the end of your story—they are the beginning of a testimony that will bring hope and healing to others.

Let God use your pain for His glory. Let Him write your redemption story. In time, you’ll look back and see that the very things you once begged Him to remove have become the platforms for your greatest victories. Speak life, and let God bring transformation.
